A day of apartment shopping with her daughter led a Severna Park woman to a $10,000 prize on the Maryland Lottery’s new Bonus 7-11-21 scratch-off game. The big winner is now crediting her apartment hunter with being her lucky charm.
The 52-year-old Anne Arundel County resident bought the $2 instant ticket at a Royal Farms store at 27992 Ocean Gateway in Salisbury. Her daughter is planning a move to that Eastern Shore town and the lucky winner was helping her find a nice place to live on that last Friday of 2016. “We went into Royal Farms for snacks,” she told Maryland Lottery officials.
“The scratch-off was a random purchase.” The state government employee bought just one instant ticket and scratched it in the car on the way back home. What she saw was shocking. “I was like, ‘Wait, what’s 8 plus 3,’ ” she said. “I just couldn’t believe it was true.”
Once home, the lucky player shared the news with her husband, who had been out with friends. She wanted to deliver the good news in person.
A skeptic, he at first didn’t believe she had won. “I thought it was a hoax or a printing error,” said the winner’s husband, who accompanied her to Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim the prize.
The mother of two adult children shared that if it weren’t for the road trip with her daughter, she would have missed her brush with Lottery luck. She plans to use the $10,000 prize toward a family vacation.
