DUBLIN shocked Cork in a capital gains battle after it emerged the €88 million EuroMillions jackpot was won in Dublin and not in the Rebel County.
With the rumour mill generating a frenzy of claims that a 36-strong Cork factory syndicate won the top prize, reports emerged last night linking a rival syndicate in the greater Dublin area with the massive win.
The National Lottery confirmed at 6pm that the winning ticket was in fact sold in Dublin and not Cork. The precise location remains unclear but initial rumours are that the giant haul was won by a family group rather than a syndicate.
The winners, rumoured to be located in Dublin’s commuter belt rather than in the city, were said to be absolutely delighted with the media spotlight being focused on Cork.
But in Little Island on the outskirts of Cork city, locals were heartbroken that the €88 million will not be spent locally. Speculation had linked a 36-strong syndicate of cleaners, maintenance workers, general operatives and administrative staff from Janssen pharmaceuticals with the win.
However, Janssen declined to make any comment. It has now emerged that the rumours which had linked Little Island with the giant win were misleading.
