A single ticket holder from Queensland has become one of the biggest winners in the history of Australia Powerball after scooping a magnificent $55 million in Thursday’s draw.
The top prize had grown to gargantuan proportions following a run of six draws without a division one winner, leading to a surge of interest ahead of the draw. Lotterywest estimated that 650 tickets would be sold each minute during the busiest period of the afternoon.
The numbers drawn were 6, 8, 23, 31, 36 and 39 with Powerball 15. One lucky player matched all six numbers plus the Powerball, although their identity was not immediately clear as the winning entry was not registered to a Winner’s Circle card.
Tatts Group Lotteries spokeswoman Elissa Lewis said: “For the mystery ticket holder who has won the entire $55 million division one prize, when they discover their life-changing windfall it will a moment they will never forget!”
There have only been three larger Australia Powerball jackpots given away since the game was launched, headlined by the record $80 million from back in July 2009. The biggest prize ever claimed by a single ticket remains the $70 million won by a player from Hervey Bay in January 2016.
As well as the jackpot winner, there were over 1 million other players who picked up prizes on Thursday, including 11 participants who landed $121,040 each after matching six main numbers. Take a look at the Australia Powerball Results page for a full prize breakdown.
The Australia Powerball jackpot will reset to $3 million for the next draw, giving players another chance to grab a life-changing amount of cash. If you would like to try and emulate the latest big winner, tickets can be bought from authorised retailers in Australia or online.
